In a 2015 survey by TDWI, 69% of respondents identified SQL on Hadoop as a must-have for making Hadoop ready for enterprise use. This is not surprising because both technical and business users know and love SQL, plus have portfolios of tools that rely on it. The catch is that early versions of Hadoop were devoid of ANSI-standard SQL.

The high demand among users for SQL with Hadoop has not gone unnoticed by the vendor and open source communities. They are now supplying many tools and platform extensions that support SQL and similar query or relational technologies natively, in the so-called “SQL on Hadoop” paradigm. In the complementary “SQL off Hadoop” approach, some are extending their database and data exploration tools to reach Hadoop data via multiplatform SQL but are processing the resulting data sets elsewhere

This wealth of options makes users wonder: Which of the SQL for Hadoop options should we deploy for specific use cases? What are their relative strengths and weaknesses? Which of these will fade away and which will become established standards?
